✨Teaching Bio✨

A firm believer in sharing her passion for music through education, Megan maintains a vibrant private studio in the Baltimore-Washington metro area, where she teaches students of all ages and abilities in her private studio. After spending 2022-2023 in the Twin Cities, Megan remains a member of the faculty at St. Paul School of Music, continuing to teach flute students in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area virtually. With over 15 years of teaching experience, she has helped grade school students achieve top scores at the regional and all state levels, prepared students for competitions and auditions, educated students on career options, helped students get into the college music programs of their dreams, and helped instill a love of music and work ethic in her students. Megan has had students go on to study music at the collegiate level at New England Conservatory/Tufts University Double-Degree Program, University of Massachusetts, and The Hartt School.

Additionally, she is a Chamber Music Coach for The Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) Fellowship Chamber Music Program and has previously taught for Opus Music Academy, The Bel Air Arts Academy, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program, Young Audiences/Arts for Learning Maryland, The Baltimore School for the Arts TWIGS program, adjudicated the 2019 Columbia Orchestra Young Artist Competition, and has been a guest flutist and educator for The Annapolis Symphony’s Music Van.

✨Teaching Philosophy✨

As an educator, I strive to help my students achieve success on the flute while instilling a lifelong love of music and learning. I aim to create a flexible, nurturing, and collaborative learning environment in which all students feel safe, valued, and celebrated and will grow as individuals and musicians. Lessons are based on a strong foundation of fundamental technique and practice methods to enable complete flexibility of sound and expression.

I teach students of all ages and abilities in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. I am committed to helping flutists define and reach their goals, from learning how to make the first sound on the head joint to auditioning for college music programs and beyond. With over 14 years of teaching experience, I have helped instill a love of music and work ethic amongst students of all ages and abilities, helped grade school students achieve top scores at the regional and all state levels, prepared students for competitions and auditions, educated students on career options, and helped students get into the college music programs of their dreams.

Whether they are in person or online, all lessons are personally tailored to each student and are dependent on age, ability, interests, and personal goals. Each lesson is based on a strong foundation of technique and musicianship and will consist of warm-ups, tone exercises, scale patterns, articulation studies, etudes, solo pieces, chamber music, active listening assignments, score analysis, audition preparation, and more. After every lesson, each student receives a detailed lesson summary with a practice assignment for the following week.

In person lessons will take place at your home in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. For lessons, we will need a quiet space with minimal distractions that has two places to sit. In person lessons can pivot to online lessons due to illness, inclement weather, transportation, etc. as needed.

My students have been enjoying the ability to have lessons at home over Zoom where they can continue to learn and develop their skills no matter where they reside or what the weather is up to. I have had the privilege of teaching students online from Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Minnesota, and beyond and have so enjoyed taking advantage of all that technology has to offer in lessons. Online lessons are structured the same way that in person lessons are and come with the addition of a shared Digital Private Lesson Notebook that will be updated during lessons to contain lesson summaries and practice assignments.

At the start of all in person lessons, please be prepared with:

  • Your flute, music stand, sheet music, notebook, pencil, and flute cleaning swab

At the start of all online lessons, please be prepared with:

  • Device and charger, a stable internet connection, your flute, music stand, sheet music, pencil, Digital Private Lesson Notebook, and flute cleaning swab

Practicing between lessons greatly accelerates the learning process and is expected of all students. In lessons, we will work together to identify personalized and healthy practice routines that will consist of warmups, technical exercises, scale patterns, repertoire, and more. We will identify daily practicing time goals that will increase as each student progresses and will be tailored to their learning style and musical goals. After every lesson, each student receives a detailed lesson summary with a practice assignment for the following week.
